Volunteering

We are a completely volunteer run facility and we have frequent volunteer work parties at the museum (see our calendar). Families and individuals are encouraged to participate and help us improve our museum and events. It’s fun to volunteer- you get up close and personal with the museum and feel good about your work. When you work on a project you get not only our thanks but the satisfaction of contributing to a wonderful place.

We are currently looking for knowledgeable volunteers to lead walks and teach children and families. For general volunteering, no special knowledge is necessary. We need handypersons, painters, cleaners, organizers, errand runners, weed pullers, trail clearers, and animal holders. When we have a Playshop, we need greeters to staff the check-in table and help at lunch time with accomodations.

If your child is attending a School Day Out Program, you are welcome to come out that day and participate. Contact Karen to discuss how you can be a bigger part of the museum. Thanks!

Volunteer in the Garden

Do you love our butterfly garden? Want to be part of a cool club to take care of it this summer? We need you to come out once a month and weed and water the garden; we’ll show you how the first time at our volunteer orientation. Also look for butterflies while you are there and record what you see. Join us for our thank you party at the end of the summer! We thank you- and so do the butterfllies! Call Karen to register at 541 968-1986.

butterfly garden Alvord FarmWe’d like to re-make the garden in Spring 2012, with raised beds and pea gravel paths. Also a bench would be nice. We need your donations of time and materials (like wood) to make this happen. Please let us know if you can be of service. Thanks!

  1. Hi, Willa!

My daughter (Anna Alkin) and her husband and son moved from Austin to Eugene in July, and now live a little over a mile from her father and me. We were just chatting about an hour ago, and she told me that she had volunteered to work at the museum at “Alvord Farm.” Upon inquiry, I figured out that you and John are the proprietors! She was quite amazed to learn that I had known both of you way back in the sixties. Small world — or town!

    • hi Barbara, this is Karen, the coordinator. I’ll forward your message to Willa in an email as she doesn’t get on here very often. Thanks!
